When the extra length earns its place

Four metres covers the layouts that two will not: modules split across a wide balcony, an L-shaped railing, a pair of frames either side of a doorway, or a small ground mount where the rows are separated by a walkway. It also covers the common case where the inverters end up further apart than the drawing suggested, because the mounting points that actually existed were not where you hoped.

The general rule on cable length

Buy the length you need plus a service loop, and do not buy a run so long that you are managing a coil of surplus. Excess cable on an outdoor array is not free — it needs securing, it collects water in the loop, and it gives wind something to work at over the years. That said, if you are genuinely between the two lengths, take the longer one. A short cable is a failed installation; a long one is ten minutes with cable ties.

Before you order

Measure the routed path around the frame rather than the direct distance, and add slack at each connector. Check the branch circuit rating too — how many EZ1 units you can parallel is set by the circuit feeding them, not by the cable joining them.
